Opening a Bank Account

You generally need two forms of ID (Passport + Student ID/State ID), proof of address (Lease or Utility Bill), and an SSN or ITIN. Some banks require an opening deposit ($25–$100). Credit Unions often have lower fees.

Getting an SSN & ID

You can apply for a Social Security Number (SSN) if you are work-authorized. Bring your passport, I-94, and any work authorization documents. Apply at the Social Security Administration office. For a State ID or Driver’s License, visit your state’s DMV (License Office).

Immigration Tips

  • Keep your I-94 record safe and download a copy from the Custom Border Protection website.
  • Always carry a copy of your passport/visa and your I-20/DS-2019 if you’re a student.
  • Report any address change to USCIS within 10 days using Form AR-11.
  • Maintain your status by keeping your documents valid, renewing your passport early, and staying aware of visa expiration dates.
